Unit 1 · Drugs Acting on the Central Nervous System 10 hrs

Neurohumoral transmission in the CNS and the physiological roles of GABA and the other central neurotransmitters; and the pharmacology of general and local anaesthetics, sedative-hypnotics, antiepileptics, antiparkinsonian agents and analgesics — with their mechanisms, adverse effects and therapeutic uses.

Unit 2 · Drugs Used in Psychiatry and Substance Abuse 7 hrs

The classification, mechanism of action and adverse drug reactions of antipsychotics, antidepressants, anxiolytics and mood stabilisers; alcohol and disulfiram; and substance abuse, drug addiction and the general principles of de-addiction.

Unit 3 · Chemotherapy 14 hrs

The chemotherapy of infectious and neoplastic disease — general principles of antimicrobial therapy, sulphonamides and antibiotics, antitubercular, antileprotic, antifungal, antiviral, antimalarial and anthelmintic agents, together with antineoplastic agents and immunosuppressants, and the problem of drug resistance.

Unit 4 · Drugs Acting on the Endocrine System 10 hrs

The pharmacology of the anterior and posterior pituitary hormones; thyroid and antithyroid drugs; parathormone, calcitonin and vitamin D; insulin and the oral hypoglycaemic agents; ACTH and the corticosteroids; oral contraceptives, drugs acting on the uterus, and the management of PCOD.

Unit 5 · Drugs Acting on the Gastrointestinal Tract 4 hrs

Drugs used in peptic ulcer disease; drugs for constipation and diarrhoea; emetics and anti-emetics; and digestants, carminatives, appetizers and anorectics.
