Unit 1 · Herbal Industries, Institutions and Trade 8 hrs

A general introduction to the herbal industries, the institutions supporting them and the structure of the herbal trade in India and internationally.

Unit 2 · Commercial Production and Standardization of Botanicals 10 hrs

The commercial production and standardization of botanicals such as Ashwagandha, Turmeric, Ginseng and Amla; the significance of AYUSH/WHO-GMP, GLP and USFDA requirements; and the production of standardized herbal extracts for antistress, antidiabetic, antihyperlipidaemic and immunomodulatory applications.

Unit 3 · Volatile Oils and AYUSH Formulations 12 hrs

The commercial production and standardization of volatile oils including eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint and rosemary oils; and the preparation and standardization of AYUSH formulations, together with the cultivation and processing of medicinal and aromatic plants in India.

Unit 4 · Analytical Techniques for Phytoconstituents 8 hrs

Modern analytical techniques applied to natural products — UV and IR spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and atomic spectroscopy — and their use in the characterisation of plant constituents.

Unit 5 · Global Regulation and Pharmacopoeial Monographs 7 hrs

The identification and analysis of bioactive phytoconstituents; international regulation of traditional medicine including the EMA, TGA (Australian Regulatory Guidelines for Complementary Medicines) and Natural Health Products (Canada); harmonization challenges and mutual recognition; safety, efficacy and pharmacovigilance in herbal-product regulation; and monographs in the Indian Pharmacopoeia, USP Herbal Medicine and Dietary Supplement, and the Ayurvedic and Unani Pharmacopoeias of India.
