Unit 1 · Environmental Pollution 3 hrs

The definition, scope and importance of environmental studies; the types, causes, effects and control measures of air, water, soil, noise and nuclear pollution; solid-waste and hazardous-waste management in the pharmaceutical setting; and the pharmacist's role in conservation and the sustainable use of resources.

Unit 2 · Pharmaceutical Waste and Effluent Management 3 hrs

Types of pharmaceutical waste — chemical, expired drugs, packaging and biomedical waste; the Biomedical Waste Management Rules (2016) and CPCB guidelines; the design and functioning of an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP); and water-purification methods used in pharmaceutical settings (reverse osmosis, UV, distillation and filtration).

Unit 3 · Environmental Impact of the Pharmaceutical Industry 3 hrs

Sources of pollution in pharmaceutical manufacturing; solid, liquid and gaseous waste streams; the environmental risks posed by active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and their dosage forms; and the impact of pharmaceutical residues on ecosystems and human health.

Unit 4 · Sustainability in the Pharmaceutical Sector 3 hrs

Principles of sustainable development as applied to pharma; the principles and practices of green pharmacy; and energy conservation and resource optimisation across manufacturing operations.

Unit 5 · Government Policies, Compliance and Practical Exposure 3 hrs

Environmental law — the Environment (Protection) Act 1986 and the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act; the National Green Tribunal and regulatory bodies (CPCB, SPCB); government initiatives including Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the Namami Gange river-rejuvenation programme and Jal Jeevan Mission; and the ISO-14000 series.
