Unit 1 · Solubility & Buffers 9 hrs
Solubility expression and solute–solvent interactions, solubility of solids, liquids and gases, Raoult's law and factors affecting solubility; the effect of pH, partition coefficient and critical solution temperature; and buffers — the buffer equation, buffer capacity, preparation and indicators.
Unit 2 · Interfacial Phenomena 8 hrs
Surface and interfacial tension and their measurement, surface free energy, spreading coefficient, surface-active agents, HLB and detergency; adsorption at solid and liquid interfaces (contact angle, wetting); and the electric double layer, Nernst and zeta potential.
Unit 3 · Colloidal & Coarse Dispersions 12 hrs
Colloidal dispersions — types, and optical, kinetic and electrical properties and stability; and coarse dispersions — suspensions (Stokes' law, sedimentation, flocculation) and emulsions (theories of emulsification and stabilization, and physical instabilities such as creaming, coalescence and phase inversion).
Unit 4 · Rheology 8 hrs
Newtonian and non-Newtonian systems; thixotropy and negative thixotropy; the determination of rheological properties with single- and multi-point viscometers; and viscoelasticity and the applications of rheology in pharmacy.
Unit 5 · Micromeritics 8 hrs
Particle size and size distribution, particle shape and surface area and their determination; and the flow properties of powders — determination, significance and methods of enhancement.
