Course contents — unit by unit · PCI NEP 2020 BP205T

Unit 1 · Metabolic Pathways & Biogenetic Studies 10 hrs

The basic metabolic pathways and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites — the shikimic-acid, acetate and amino-acid pathways; the use of radioactive isotopes in biogenetic studies; and pathway-prediction and modern genetic tools such as CRISPR/Cas9.

Unit 2 · Primary Metabolites 12 hrs

Pharmacognostic study of drugs containing primary metabolites — carbohydrates (acacia, agar, tragacanth, honey), proteins and enzymes (gelatin, casein, papain, bromelain, streptokinase), and lipids (castor oil, olive oil, cocoa butter, wool fat, beeswax).

Unit 3 · Secondary Metabolites 12 hrs

Pharmacognostic study of drugs containing secondary metabolites — alkaloids (Vinca, Rauwolfia, Opium), volatile oils (lemongrass, clove, cinnamon), tannins, resins (guggul, asafoetida), glycosides (senna, liquorice, digitalis), and flavonoids and terpenoids.

Unit 4 · Extraction Methods for Medicinal Plants 12 hrs

Conventional extraction — infusion, decoction, maceration, percolation, reflux, distillation and Soxhlet and successive-solvent extraction; and modern methods — supercritical-fluid, microwave-assisted, ultrasonic-assisted, enzyme-assisted and pressurized-liquid extraction.

Unit 5 · Isolation, Identification & Characterization 14 hrs

Separation and isolation techniques (planar, column, preparative TLC and flash chromatography); identification by phytochemical, chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques; TLC/HPTLC fingerprinting and markers; and the screening of alkaloids, glycosides, saponins, tannins, flavonoids and steroids.
