Course contents — unit by unit · PCI NEP 2020 BP204T

Unit 1 · Aliphatic Saturated Hydrocarbons 12 hrs

Alkanes — preparation (Wurtz, Kolbe, Clemmensen and Wolff–Kishner reactions), chemical reactions and the mechanism of free-radical halogenation, with pharmaceutical applications (liquid, soft and hard paraffin); and cycloalkanes — Baeyer's strain theory, the Coulson–Moffitt modification and the Sachse–Mohr theory.

Unit 2 · Aliphatic Unsaturated Hydrocarbons 12 hrs

Alkenes — preparation, chemical reactions, the mechanism of electrophilic addition, Markovnikov's and anti-Markovnikov's rules and ozonolysis; and conjugated dienes — stability, the Diels–Alder reaction, and 1,2- and 1,4-addition reactions.

Unit 3 · Alkyl Halides 12 hrs

Nucleophilic substitution (SN1 and SN2) and elimination (E1 and E2) reactions — mechanism, kinetics, substrate structure, solvent effect and stereochemistry; Zaitsev's rule; and the comparison of substitution versus elimination.

Unit 4 · Benzene & Its Derivatives 12 hrs

IUPAC nomenclature and the structure of benzene, the molecular-orbital picture, resonance, aromaticity and Hückel's rule; electrophilic aromatic substitution (nitration, halogenation, Friedel–Crafts alkylation and acylation, sulphonation); and the effect of substituents on reactivity and orientation.

Unit 5 · Carbonyl Compounds 12 hrs

Aldehydes and ketones — preparation and properties, nucleophilic addition, aldol and crossed-aldol condensation, Cannizzaro, benzoin and Perkin reactions, and oxidation and reduction; with pharmaceutical applications (chloral, paraldehyde, ketoprofen).
