Unit 1 · Nervous System 14 hrs
Organization of the nervous system, neurons and neuroglia, nerve conduction, action potential, synapses and neurotransmitters; the central nervous system — meninges, ventricles, cerebrospinal fluid, brain and spinal cord; and the pathophysiology of epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, stroke, migraine, depression, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease and meningitis.
Unit 2 · Gastrointestinal System 12 hrs
Anatomy and functions of the GI tract, stomach acid production and regulation, small and large intestine, salivary glands, pancreas and liver, and digestion and absorption; and the pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel disease, peptic ulcer, jaundice, hepatitis, typhoid and fatty-liver disease.
Unit 3 · Respiratory & Urinary Systems 12 hrs
The respiratory system — anatomy of the lungs, mechanism and regulation of respiration, lung volumes and gas transport, with the pathophysiology of asthma, COPD and tuberculosis; and the urinary system — kidney and nephron anatomy, urine formation, the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system, and renal failure and urinary-tract infections.
Unit 4 · Endocrine System 10 hrs
Classification of hormones and the mechanism of hormone action; the structure and functions of the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pancreas, pineal and thymus glands; and the pathophysiology of diabetes, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, goitre and polycystic ovary syndrome.
Unit 5 · Reproductive System & Cancer 12 hrs
Anatomy and functions of the male and female reproductive systems, sex hormones, menstruation, fertilization, spermatogenesis, oogenesis and pregnancy; the pathophysiology of sexually transmitted diseases (AIDS, syphilis, gonorrhoea); and the etiology and pathogenesis of cancer.
