Unit 1 · Introduction to the Profession of Pharmacy 9 hrs

History and evolution of the pharmacy profession in India (education, industry and organizations); the scope of pharmacy across community, hospital, clinical and industrial practice; pharmacopoeias (IP, BP, USP, BPC, the International Pharmacopoeia and the National Formulary of India) and the structure of the Indian Pharmacopoeia; and the structure, handling and Latin terminology of prescriptions.

Unit 2 · Pharmaceutical Calculations & Dosage Forms 9 hrs

The metric system and calculations based on alligation, proof spirit, isotonic and dilute solutions and geometric dilution; posology and dose calculation by age, body weight and body surface area; routes of administration and the classification of dosage forms; and active pharmaceutical ingredients and excipients.

Unit 3 · Solid Dosage Forms 9 hrs

Powders — classification, dusting, effervescent, efflorescent, hygroscopic powders and eutectic mixtures; tablets — definition, types, excipients and methods of preparation; and capsules — types, sizes, advantages and preparation.

Unit 4 · Monophasic & Biphasic Liquids 9 hrs

Liquids for internal use (aromatic waters, syrups, elixirs, linctuses) and external use (liniments, lotions, gargles, mouthwashes, drops, tinctures); and biphasic systems — suspensions (flocculated and deflocculated) and emulsions, their types, emulsifying agents and preparation.

Unit 5 · Semisolid Dosage Forms 9 hrs

Ointments, pastes, creams and gels — ointment bases and excipients and general methods of preparation; and suppositories and pessaries — types, ideal base properties, displacement value and preparation.
